Local marketplace safety

Make every PorchDeals meetup a safer one.

A practical safety guide for buying, selling, trading, and meeting nearby neighbors through PorchDeals.

Meet publicly

Use bright, busy places or police safe exchange zones.

Inspect first

Do not pay until you have seen and checked the item.

Report quickly

Flag suspicious listings or behavior from the listing page.

Pick the right place

Public, well-lit, familiar meetup spots reduce risk and make both sides more comfortable.

Slow the deal down

Pressure, urgency, or unusual payment requests are warning signs. Take time to verify.

Use report tools

Reports help PorchDeals review suspicious activity and protect the local marketplace.

Safety essentials

Guidelines for every local deal

Meet in public places

Always meet in well-lit, busy public locations like shopping center parking lots, police station parking lots, or coffee shops. Never invite strangers to your home or go to theirs.

Bring a friend

Whenever possible, bring a friend or family member with you. There is safety in numbers, especially for high-value transactions.

Meet during daylight

Schedule meetups during daylight hours. If evening is the only option, choose a very well-lit public location.

Never pay before pickup

Never send payment before you've seen and inspected the item in person. Legitimate sellers will not pressure you to pay in advance.

Trust your instincts

If something feels wrong, it probably is. Walk away from any transaction that makes you uncomfortable — no deal is worth your safety.

Inspect before you pay

Test electronics, check for damage, and verify the item matches the listing photos before handing over any payment.

Use secure payment methods

Cash, Venmo, Zelle, and Apple Pay are all acceptable. Be cautious of buyers who insist on unusual payment methods like gift cards or wire transfers.

Document the transaction

Take photos of the item during the meetup. Keep records of your messages in case any dispute arises later.

Vehicle safety

For vehicle sales, always meet at a public location. Accompany the buyer on any test drive — never let a stranger drive your vehicle alone.

Report suspicious activity

If you encounter a scammer or suspicious listing, use the Report button on the listing immediately. Our team reviews all reports within 24 hours.

Safe exchange zones

Many police departments have designated "safe exchange zones" in their parking lots with 24/7 surveillance cameras. These are ideal for high-value transactions.

Watch for scams

Common scams include overpayment by check, requests to ship items, and fake payment screenshots. If an offer seems too good to be true, it probably is.

Scam warnings

Red flags worth pausing for

Most safe deals feel straightforward. If the other person tries to rush, redirect, overpay, or complicate the exchange, step back.

Advance payment pressure

Someone asks you to send money before you have inspected the item in person.

Fake payment proof

A buyer sends a screenshot or email claiming payment was made, but funds are not actually available.

Shipping requests

A local deal suddenly turns into a request to ship, use a courier, or move the transaction off-platform.

Too-good-to-be-true offers

The price, urgency, or story feels designed to rush you into skipping normal safety steps.

Emergency

If you ever feel unsafe or threatened during a transaction, leave immediately and call 911. Your safety is more important than any deal. PorchDeals is not responsible for in-person transactions but we take community safety seriously and will cooperate fully with law enforcement when required.
